Praying the steps at Holy Cross Immaculata
MT. ADAMS, Ohio (Adam Clements) -- Praying the steps of Holy Cross-Immaculata Church has been a local tradition for more than 150 years.
It's a solemn, reflective event. Eight to ten thousand people are expected to pray on the steps of the Mt. Adams Church this Good Friday.
There are 240 steps beginning at Riverside Drive, for those who pray on all of them. Many pick up the steps at St. Gregory where there are 96 steps.
Praying the steps started when the church was built in 1860. It was first recorded in 1873. For many people, it's a tradition that began during their childhood that they continue with their children.
The day ends at the church with a community fish fry. It runs from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.
