Public smoke-out marks pot holiday in Colorado
DENVER (AP) -- Revelers raised joints, pipes and vaporizer devices to the skies above a central Denver park in a defiant toast to the April 20 pot holiday.
Police didn't swoop in for mass arrests at 4:20 p.m. MDT, the moment for the traditional smoke out marking the holiday.
Once the province of activists and stoners, April 20 has gone mainstream in the first state in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana. But public consumption of pot remains illegal in Colorado.
On Sunday, Denver police reported issuing 37 citations, 31 for public consumption of marijuana and the rest for unspecified violations.
Police say they had issued 21 citations on Saturday, the first day of the weekend-long celebrations. All were for public consumption of marijuana. One person was arrested Saturday on suspicion of attempting to distribute the drug.
