Covington senior honored as Gates Millenium Scholar

COVINGTON, Ky. (Derek Drake) -- A local high school senior is one of only 1,000 students across the country to be honored as a Gates Millennium Scholar for the Class of 2014!

Janeyra Mitchell, a senior at Holmes High School in Covington, Ky., will receive a scholarship that essentially pays for her entire college education. The scholarship, granted through the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, takes care of any unmet financial need to a U.S. accredited college of the winner's choice.

The scholarship could amount to more than $100,000 for Mitchell as she plans on attending Clark Atlanta University, where tuition/fees and housing amounts to more than $30,000 a year.

"I am so excited," Mitchell said in a release sent to Local 12 by Covington Independent Public Schools. "Going to Clark Atlanta has been my dream. I knew I couldn't afford to go without scholarships. When I showed my mom the letter from Gates, she just cried and cried. We are so happy."

Mitchell is one of 1,000 students of 52,000 applicants to receive the scholarship.

"Your accomplishment is especially notable in context of the more than 52,000 students who applied, making this year one of the most competitive candidates group in the program's history," her award letter stated. "We are very excited for you to join the community of Gates Scholars and we are very pleased to confer this distinct honor that distinguishes you as a Leader for America's Future."

Mitchell plans to major in Fashion Design/Business Management. She currently has a 4.0 grade point average and is No. 6 in her graduating class. Though she works 30 hours a week at two part time jobs, she still remains active at school and in her community.

She was a member of Regional Youth Leadership Program, Leadership Resiliency, Bulldogs Give Back Club, and Harvest Edge. She also participated in the Great American Cleanup, Plant the Promise, Fairhaven Rescue Mission and the Community Book Drive. Additionally, she was named outstanding student in U.S. History, Biology, Science Traditional, Business and Marketing Career Cluster and English.

Mitchell also received the "Key to the Future Award".
