Defense questions where teen got alcohol in deadly crash case
FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- Local 12 has the first idea of how a mother accused of providing alcohol to underage drinkers before a deadly accident plans to defend herself.
Only Local 12 News was in the courtroom for a hearing for Doreeen Schafer Wednesday afternoon. Schafer faces three new charges of permitting underage consumption at her New Year's party. The victim's mother is wondering why it is taking so long for this case to go to trial.
During Wednesday's pre-trial Schafer's attorney told the judge he was going to ask for a copy of the autopsy report and Aaron Jones' medial records. They say witness statements indicate he had smoked marijuana the evening of the deadly crash.
Jones was killed New Year's morning when he slammed his vehicle into a stone wall in Hamilton's Milken Woods Park. Investigators say he was intoxicated. Prosecutors claim it was Schafer who served alcohol to Jones and others during a party at her Fairfield home.
Jones' mother is upset the trial will take place nearly a year after her son's death. Diana Jones says the whole ordeal has taken a tole on her and her family.
Schafer's three-day trial is set for December 12th. A jury will hear the case.
