Boating safety ahead of Memorial Day weekend

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (Adam Clements) -- Memorial Day weekend kicks off the start of the summer season, and that means a lot of swimming pools will be opening all around the Tri-State.

Despite the high river levels a lot of boats will take to the Ohio River as well. Safety experts urge everyone to wear life preservers.

If anyone drinks alcohol while boating, remember the same rules apply as on the road especially if you're behind the wheel.

Pools are also opening and officials say keep an eye on everyone, especially children. Teach kids pool etiquette, safety and how to swim. Fire officials tell us on average there are about 11 to 12 drownings every day in the United States, with 2 to 3 of those drownings coming from children under the age of 14.

First responders also remind you to learn CPR.  You can learn at your local fire department, YMCA or Red Cross.
