Cincinnati and Xavier secure long-term agreement to continue basketball rivalry
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- After two years on a neutral court, the Crosstown Shootout will head back to campus with its original name instead of the "Crosstown Classic."
According to a press release Monday, UC and Xavier leaders have announced that the schools have completed a ten year agreement to continue the men's basketball rivalry. The annual rivalry will return to campus sites and renew the long-time title of "Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout."
"We are committed to providing our collective student-athletes and fan bases with the optimum collegiate environment on the nation stage," Mike Bohn, UC's Director of Athletics said in the press release. "The on-campus venues will enhance the bond with students, alumni, and community partners."
The Bearcats and Muskies will play February 18th at Fifth Third Arena then shift back to the Cintas Center the next season and continue back and forth. That's the way it was for 25 years until the annual game moved to US Bank Arena after a brawl between the two teams in 2011.
Greg Christopher, Xavier's Director of Athletics, said, "The Crosstown Shootout is our city's game. It's an important part of Cincinnati's sports landscape and I'm glad its long-term future is secure. Returning the game to our campuses is an opportunity to re-set the Shootout in a positive light."
