Two king penguins hatch at Newport Aquarium

NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) -- The Newport Aquarium has two new king penguin chicks. Two hatched over the weekend.

Both chicks began to hatch at the same time Friday evening, even though they're not related. They were fully hatched Saturday morning.

The chicks are about the size of a baseball and weigh about half of a pound. While they sound small, senior biologist Dan Clady says "These were some of the biggest king penguin chicks I've ever seen." They'll grow to be about three feet tall.

One chick was born to parents Bebe and Wednesday. The second chick was born to Kroger and Dumas, but was moved to foster parents Bubba and Valentine. The aquarium says they are more experienced.

Newport Aquarium is one of only 16 institutions in the United States to exhibit king penguins. The public will get to name the two king penguin chicks through the Newport Aquarium Facebook page beginning Friday.
