Suspect in Dayton VA shooting in custody
DAYTON, Ohio (WKRC) -- Police and federal officials responded Monday afternoon to the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio because of an active shooter in the building. That suspect is in custody.
According to Dayton officials, he was taken into custody by hospital security at another Dayton hospital. There are reports of only one person who was shot. That victim is expected to recover.
The suspected shooter is a former hospital employee. 59-year-old Neil Moore was a housekeeper at the Dayton VA hospital. Police say Moore walked into the building at around noon telling hospital officials that he was there to seek psychiatric treatment. He then allegedly opened fire in a break room in the basement.
One man was shot in the ankle while trying to take the gun away from Moore. Moore left the building, got into his truck, and went to nearby Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. That is where security guards took him into custody.
Police responded swiftly, locking down the building and evacuating hospital staff and patients. They were taken to a parking lot located a safe distance from the building.
No motive has been given for the shooting.
