New restaurant opens in Lower Price Hill
CINCINNATI (Angenette Levy) -- A new restaurant has opened in the neighborhood and it's about more than serving up pizzas and hoagies.
The owner of Blochead Pizza hopes to be a part of sparking revitalization in the neighborhood. Blochead Pizza will celebrate its grand opening on Friday. But, it opened on the corner of State Ave. and Staebler St. late last week. Manager Donna Jones said it's the first restaurant to operate in Lower Price Hill in at least 10 years.
"And the neighborhood loves it! They love it! I love it," Jones said.
Blochead Pizza is owned by Bloc Ministries. The organization works with disadvantaged people in Price Hill. 12 of Blochead's 13 employees are from Lower Price Hill and one lives up the hill.
"I can't tell you how fun it is to work with these guys," said Pastor Dwight Young, founder of Bloc Ministries. "They're sharp people that live here. They just want to work. They want to bring something and add something to the community and this is a way they can do that."
Young and Jones said they've hired some people who might not be able to find a job otherwise because of something in their past.
"One of the things, actually I'm not going to say the name, but one of the things one of the young women said when we hired her, she said this is the first time in her life that she felt this good about herself," Jones said.
Rosemary Kidd said working at Blochead is a perfect fit for her. She does not own a car.
"I stay a block and a half away so walking, I can't ever say that I'm late."
Along with providing food and jobs, Young hopes that Blochead pizza could convince other businesses to open in Lower Price Hill.
"If we're willing to do that and two or three other people are willing to do that, in three or four years we have five or six businesses again and all of the sudden things start to feel better and people start to go to work every day," Young said.
The Hatton Foundation and JTM helped Bloc Ministries open the restaurant.
Blochead Pizza is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. It's open from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It's open from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
