Daughter raises money to send dad on trip after leukemia battle
OWENSVILLE, Ohio (Adam Clements) -- Motorcycles have always been a passion for Bill Moeller. He's repaired engines at his Owensville shop for 30 years.
Last year, Bill's bikes took a backseat, when he was diagnosed with leukemia. "It drags you down physically and you wonder if you're going to pull back out of it." says Moeller of his fight with cancer, "the ideas that it may not turn out good for you keep entering into your mind, and it's a constant battle to keep fighting off those ideas."
Bill did fight off those ideas along with his leukemia. He's now cancer free. "It touched my heart because I saw the struggles he went through, and I wanted to make something good happen."
Bill's daughter, Kelli, set up an online fund to send her father to the Bonneville Salt Flats, a land speed motorcycle race in Utah. The donations came pouring in, setting up the perfect surprise for Bill. "When I saw them, I thought it was an intervention." joked Bill.
Kelli was able to raise more than $7,500 to send her father on the trip. Bill says the surprise was overwhelming. "It was so helpful to change my mindset about life, to give me something definite to live for and work for, and to motivate me to keep on every day."
Kelli says she's glad she could make her dad smile again. "It means the world to me, because I didn't think he'd be here, and for a long time he wasn't here mentally, and he's back. And I owe it to everyone involved that brought my dad back."
