Federal government, Ky. close to reaching agreement over hemp seeds

WASHINGTON (WKRC) -- There may soon be a compromise between the federal government and Kentucky.

The two sides are locked in a dispute over 250 pounds of hemp seeds.

The seeds were sent from Italy to Louisville where state experts planned to plant and study them.

Hemp is part of the marijuana plant used to make paper and other products.

It's illegal in the United States, so customs officials confiscated the seeds.

The Commonwealth wants to legalize hemp. It hopes to end the stalemate by applying for a permit to obtain the seeds, which must be planted by June 1.
