"Drunkorexia" dangerous new trend among girls

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A new trend found among young adults and teens involves dieting and drinking.

Many girls and young women don't eat before a night out, then binge drink on an empty stomach.  Doctors called it "drunkorexia."  It started out as a way to cut back on calories and still be able to go out and have a good time.
A recent study by the University of Texas found that 30 percent of young woman between 18 and 23 said they have dieted so they can drink.

Kiki Vassilakos saw her friends skip eating to drink, "Its very image based, you know.  People get very vain.  if you go out you don't want to feel bloated cause you know you're trying to impress somebody."

Dr. John Janikas, an ER doctor, said, "Women are built differently they don't have the same enzymes to metabolize alcohol.  So now they have an empty stomach, they're ingesting a lot of alcohol and it really puts them at a  higher risk for blackouts, unprotected sex and sets them up for sexual assault."

Mixing extreme dieting with binge drinking can also lead to serious stomach problems.  Doctors suggest parents have a conversation with their daughters -- saying it may be unpleasant but it can avoid a tragedy.
