One arrested, one wanted in Evanston shooting

EVANSTON, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- Cincinnati Police arrested a man in connection with a recent shooting outside an Evanston carry out.

Police picked up 24-year-old Robert McCallum at 5:15 Tuesday morning. Investigators say McCallum shot a man outside Jack's Carry Out on Montgomery Road last week.

The 42-year-old victim had taken his son for something to eat. The father and son had a conversation with McCallum and two others inside. When the father and son walked to their car, McCallum allegedly shot the father in the chest and robbed him.

Captain Jeff Butler said, "The store separated them, put them out of the store and as they were trying to get in their car they approached, committed a robbery and shot him point-blank."

Police say the community really rallied to help police make the arrest this morning.

"It sparked community outrage, it's about the partnership and the relationship with the Evanston community, they're actually one of the leaders in the district," says Capt. Jeff Butler. "People talk to us, they realize the police are here to help, we're a partner in solving crime, and literally from the age, 16, 17 up to 60 we're getting flooded with people walking up, saying hey this is where they went, they're not Evanston residents they've only been here for a week, the information was critical to solving this.  Then ultimately with the Crime Stoppers giving us the last piece of evidence and through the good work of the investigative we were able to make the apprehension."

Robert McCallum was charged with aggravated robbery.  He is likely to face additional charges.  Officials said McCallum also fired a shot at Shelton's son but missed.

Police said Shelton is a classic innocent victim.  Ledon Shelton remains in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.  The shot severed his aorta. He was in a coma and had additional surgery Tuesday morning.

Police are still working to find a second man involved in this shooting. He is in his early 20's. They also want to find a woman who was a witness to the crime.
