Health Alert: Raw veggies and your blood pressure

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Don't bother to cook 'em at dinner if you are making vegetables.

That's the latest from a new study on beating high blood pressure.  It is that time of year where summer fruits and vegetables are in and if you like them then you probaby know you should eat them.  But this study compared veggies that are cooked to those that are raw and the impact on blood pressure.

Local 12 stopped out at the Group Health in Clifton to tell you a little bit more about this research, it is an office of TriHealth.  Researchers at the Imperial College in London looked at 2,200 people.  They compared blood pressure drops in those who ate raw vegetables to those who ate cooked and found a greater drop in those who ate the them while they were raw.  They compared certain vegetables including tomatoes, carrots and onions to find this out.
 
Getting vegetables at all is a great idea, but if you do like them raw, based on studies, it's a good way to eat em.  All vegetables are good for you, they have potassium which can help blood pressure.  But this time of year they are a little sweeter than others so raw may be the way to go if you've been told to bring blood pressure down.
