Northside homicide victim identified
CINCINNATI (Brad Underwood) -- Cincinnati Police have identified the victim of Sunday night's homicide in Northside. 41-year-old David Wheeldon was pronounced dead by the Hamilton County Coroner at the scene on Chase Avenue.
Officials received a call about a break in on Cherry Street around 6:30p.m. While driving to the scene, Sgt. George Pille of the Cincinnati Police heard a gunshot. He was on the scene within seconds and found one man dead on the sidewalk and another standing over him with a gun. According to police Sgt. Pille got out of his car and drew his gun.
Lt. Lisa Davis of the Cincinnati Police said, "In a situation like this, he did absolutely what he should. You want to make sure you have cover, using your vehicle, whatever you have available. Take cover and give commands. It sounds like those commands were made, drop the gun, show me your hands, complied immediately and was taken into custody."
Officials questioned multiple witnesses to the shooting that took place off Chase Avenue.
"Once Sgt. Pille arrived on the scene he saw several people run from the scene, some of those people stuck around, great for the Northside community that that happened," Lt. Davis said.
The names of the two men have not yet been released. It is a possibility the break-in and shooting could be related but police have not yet confirmed a connection.
No charges have been made against the man in police custody.
