'Twilight' director to helm live-action 'Beauty and the Beast'
LOS ANGELES (CBS) -- "Beauty and the Beast" is coming back to the big screen -- this time as a live-action film.
"Twilight" director Bill Condon has been tapped by Disney to helm the new version of its 1991 animated classic, Variety reports.
The news comes on the heels of the success of Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent." That live-action spin on the "Sleeping Beauty" tale took in $70 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
Disney has also released successful live-action updates of "Alice and Wonderland" and "The Wizard of Oz" (last year's "Oz the Great and Powerful"). It's also developing a live-action version of "The Jungle Book," with Jon Favreau directing, and another of "Cinderella" directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Condon is known for directing the musical film "Dreamgirls" and the final two films in the "Twilight" franchise. He also penned the screenplay for the hit film version of the musical "Chicago," and most recently helmed the Julian Assange film "The Fifth Estate."
