13-year-old boy dies in gun incident, another 13-year-old charged

GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Paula Toti) -- Officers responded to a shooting Monday afternoon in Green Township.

It happened shortly after 2p.m. in the 5500 block of Marie Avenue.  The victim was a 13-year-old boy shot in the head.  He was transported to Mercy West Hospital from the scene where he was pronounced dead.

A 13-year-old male suspect was taken into custody and charged with reckless homicide and theft of a firearm, both a third degree felony.

A family friend told Local 12 News the two 13-year-olds went into the house and had a gun.  Police said the investigation revealed the handgun in question was stolen from a house in Green Township by the suspect.  The step-mother of the boy shot told Local 12 she thought they were playing with the gun when it went off in the home.

"We didn't know if it was self-inflicted or accidental," said Sgt. Chris House of the Green Township police.

Police said after some initial confusion the suspect told an officer he was the one who fired the handgun.  It was a .357 revolver.  Police don't think the boys knew it was loaded.

The incident remains under investigation.
