Two murders in one night
CINCINNATI (Deborah Dixon) -- The Lord's Gym outreach team hauled grills to Neave St. in Lower Price Hill to feed residents hotdogs and chocolate cake. Word was out, and hundreds of residents were too.
It was so hot, a property owner offered to move the outreach effort a block away, into the shade. It might have saved their lives.
Minutes after they moved, shots rang out. Pastor Jim Turner said, "We started feeding hotdogs and pie to the community, then the gunshots, fifty people started running and screaming for their lives."
Pastor Turner and another outreach pastor ran toward the man bleeding on the sidewalk. Markeith Peek, 23, was dying.
"I held his head and prayed with him, talked to him about his relationship with Jesus Christ," Turner described. "Many times he said he couldn't feel his legs, and couldn't breathe. I saw his lips move; I got to believe he made peace with the Lord."
Cincinnati Police Captain Dan Gerard said police are very familiar with Peek. He says this was not a random shooting, but a "targeted event."
"The criminal activity Peek was into is part of an on-going investigation," Cpt. Gerard told Local 12. He believes that criminal activity led to his murder.
The outreach workers at the Lord's Gym say they will be back in Lower Price Hill next Wednesday like they always are.
Pastor Turner believes God wants them to be there and believes God needed him there last night as well.
No arrests have been made. CrimeStoppers pays out cash for clues... If you have information about the shooting, you can remain anonymous by calling (513) 352-3040.
