Landslide in SW China leaves 1 dead, 15 missing
BEIJING (AP) -- A landslide killed at least one person and left 15 missing in a village in China's mountainous southwest on Monday, the local government reported.
Two people also were injured in the disaster in Fugong County in Yunnan province, the county government said on its website. Photos on the website showed rescue workers in front of a huge pile of rocks, dirt and sand.
A woman who answered the phone in the county government's propaganda department refused to give any other details or her name.
Landslides are frequent in China, where deforestation has led to serious soil erosion.
Flooding and mudslides caused by summer rains elsewhere in China have killed a total of 23 people since June 25, the national Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.
