Riverfront Commons ribbon-cutting ceremony

NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) -- Local officials unveil a walking bridge that will connect Newport on the Levee, the Purple People Bridge and the flood wall.

Officials cut the ribbon for the first part of a new project called Riverfront Commons. The $1.2 million dollar project will run along the Ohio River and eventually connect six different cities.

The bridge and walking path are the first legs of  the planned 11.5 mile walking/ biking path that runs along the Ohio River from Ludlow on the west, to Ft. Thomas on the east. Paths will intersect to allow people to get to attractions in the six Southbank cities: Bellevue, Covington, Dayton, Ft. Thomas, Ludlow and Newport.

Planners say benefits will include eco-system restoration, riverside stabilization, economic development and recreation.
