One of soldiers killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan from Ohio

WAVERLY, Ohio (WKRC) -- One of the soldiers killed in the apparent friendly fire incident in Afghanistan was from Ohio.

Justin Helton was from near Waverly, just south of Chillicothe.  Four other U.S. troops were killed.  NATO forces had just finished a special operation in Afghanistan when Taliban militants attacked Monday night.
They called for air support.  It's believed that an air force bomber that responded may have dropped its payloads accidentally on the U.S. Soldiers.

The Pentagon says the five soldiers were Special Forces.  They were on a security operation ahead of Saturday's presidential runoff election.  The Pentagon offered its condolences to the families.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, Pentagon spokesman, said, "We need to let investigators do their work.  I mean, the tragic incident, all the way around.  And again, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families."

If it is confirmed as friendly fire, as the military suspects, it will be one of the worst friendly fire incidents since the war began in 2001.
