Amy Adams gives up first class seat to U.S. serviceman

LOS ANGELES (Jessica Derschowitz/CBS News) -- Talk about a first-class move -- Amy Adams gave up her prime seat on a flight from Detroit to Los Angeles on Friday to a U.S. serviceman booked on the same plane.

The "American Hustle" actress' gesture was noticed by Jemele Hill, co-host of ESPN's "Numbers Never Lie," who tweeted about it:

"Just saw actress Amy Adams do something incredibly classy. She gave her 1st class seat to an American soldier. I'm an even bigger fan now."

"When we were waiting to board, I saw her glance the soldier's way and then she said something to the person she was traveling with," Hill added to Today.com in an email from the flight. "Once we boarded, I saw she was in first class. I was upgraded to first class and she was a couple rows behind me. I think she must have said something to the flight attendant, because before we took off she had vacated her seat and the flight attendant brought the soldier to her seat."

Hill added to ABC News that Adams met with the solider briefly by the cockpit before heading to her new seat. "Ms. Adams did it so quietly and quickly that it speaks to her character," she said. "And somebody in coach just got a helluva seatmate!"

Adams is the daughter of a U.S. serviceman -- an "army brat" who was born in Italy and moved from base to base until her family settled in Colorado when she was about 8 years old.

The 39-year-old star earned her fifth Oscar nomination earlier this year for her role in "American Hustle." She's also appeared in films like "Man of Steel," "The Master," "The Fighter," "Julie & Julia" and "Enchanted."
