Suspicious item shut down area around City Hall

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- What appears to be scrap metal was mistaken for a World War II bomb in downtown Cincinnati.

Police say a passerby spotted the item on Central Avenue near City Hall just after 7:30. While it appeared to be a rusted air tank, the bomb squad responded in what police say was "an abundance of caution".

City Hall and Centennial Plaza were evacuated. Police closed down Central Avenue and Ninth Street in the area. A fire department robot was sent in to take a picture.

Police say those measures would have been taken for a suspicious package anywhere, not just near City Hall.

The all clear was given just after 9 a.m.
