First harvest for Freestore Foodbank's Giviing Fields
CINCINNATI, (Adam Clements) -- The Freestore Foodbank is donating fresh produce from its "Giving Fields" in Melbourne to families in need.
Student volunteers with Christ in Youth will help with the first harvest of the season. While people typically associate canned goods with the Freestore, the fresh produce gives local families in need healthy, well-balanced meal.
Molly Jordan of the Freestore Foodbank said, "I didn't realize how much my job meant until those kitchens came in and started receiving the produce. You hear their stories and hear them talk about the families that get this. They're so excited about getting this fresh food. It really pulls at your heart strings knowing that."
Some of the crops grown there this season include blueberries, apples, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli and green beans.
This is the fourth year for the Giving Fields. It's located on 10 acres of donated land. Produce production has doubled in that time thanks to a massive volunteer effort.
