New owner wants $75,000 to return fire station to county

CEDAR LAKE, Okla. (Rebecca Schleicher/KOKH/WKRC) -- A man who bought Cedar Lake property wants $75,000 dollars in damages if a judge orders him to return the land.

Commissioners say the problem began years ago when the Cedar Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. was accidentally placed on a tax delinquent list and became available for auction.

In April, county maintenance employee Howie Sutton bought the property for just $100.

Now he's fighting the county he works for to keep the property or get the cash. His attorney filed the answer to the county's original lawsuit on June 19.

Commissioner Dave Anderson was reluctant to talk about the case but he says the county will fight it until the end.

"It's money that we'd rather not have to give up," he said, "This is the beginning of a probably long process."

They expect this case to drag on for several months before they reach a final resolution.
