Mitchell Simon sentenced to 9 years for trying to kill parents

HAMILTON, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- A Butler County judge sentenced a teen to nine years in prison for starting a fire at his Liberty Township home in an attempt to kill his parents.

17-year-old Mitchell Simon pleaded guilty to attempted murder and arson charges. Simon spoke in court before the judge handed down his sentence. He says he can't take away that night but he loves his parents deeply and he wants to get help.

Mitchell's therapist said Mitchell really didn't intend to kill his parents, he only wanted to scare them and "show them who's boss". The therapist also told the judge that Mitchell's drawings and a journal were fantasy, not a plan for murder.

The therapist called Mitchell immature and self-absorbed, but said he had made a lot of progress since his arrest. He also said Mitchell had been bullied and that the Simons' parenting style led to some of his behavior issues.

All three, plus Mitchell's attorney asked the judge to keep him out of prison. They all said therapy was the best chance at being a "normal adult". The judge answered that he didn't think therapy is a cure-all and that probation was not an option.
