Health Alert: Full moon anxiety
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- It has been nearly a century since a full moon has risen on Friday the 13th.
If you are a selenophobic, a person who fears the moon, or suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia, which is a fear of Friday the 13th, you may not want to leave the house Friday, June 13th.
While many of us joke about this, psychologists at the Cleveland Clinic say for some those superstitions and fears are real. They may also have double the paralyzing powers Friday because they both fall on the same day.
The fear of Friday the 13th apparently can be traced all the way back to medieval times. Back then, it seemed like lots of bad things, like hangings and executions, happened on Fridays. Then the association of bad luck with the number 13, some say started with the 13 who attended the last supper of Jesus.
It is interesting that the moon plays a role in all because the words "lunatic" and "lunacy" are derived from the word "lunar." Lunar is the Latin word for moon. There are those who also say there's a gravitational pull from a full moon and it may influence our behavior. So much so that there are those who think it makes us do odd things or may make us more prone to accidents.
A couple things to remember in all this, it appears this is only powerful if you believe it! The June moon is also referred to as the "honey moon" because of its color and the high number of weddings held in June.
In case you're wondering, the next time a full moon will rise on a Friday the 13th will be in the year 2049.
