16-year-old wins car, gives it to friend

WOODS CROSS, Utah (WKRC) -- Most teenagers would love to have a new car, but one girl in Utah would rather help a friend in need.

16-year-olds Jessica Faasavalu and Kennedee Black have been friends since they were two years old.

Their English teacher asked them to enter into an essay contest for extra credit about what they would do with a car.

Jessica got to work, but instead of writing about what she would do with a new set of wheels, she decided to take a different approach.

"This isn't right," Jessica said. "I can't say I need this car, because I don't, and I just twirled around in that chair and thought, 'Ya know what?  Kennedee needs this car. So I erased what I had written and wrote a whole 'nother one. I would love to win, but not for me."

Jessica ended up winning the contest and a brand new Mazda.

She gave the new ride to Kennedee, who sometimes works more than 40 hours a week to help her mother support her brothers at home.

Once Kennedee figured out how to drive a manual, the two long-time friends were ready to cruise.
