Gold Star families gather to celebrate loved ones

CINCINNATI (Brad Underwood) -- Saturday is the 239th birthday of the United States Army.

More than 400 U.S. military Gold Star families got together Saturday afternoon for a boat ride along the Ohio River to honor their fallen heroes on the B&B Riverboat.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Gold Star family represents a family or individual who has lost an immediate family member in a conflict or in support of certain military operations.

For a couple of hours Saturday afternoon, hundreds of families spent this beautiful day on the B&B Riverboat taking in the trip and sharing stories about their heroes.

Families from seven different states were aboard. Some came as far as Tennessee, West Virginia and Illinois.

This is the first gathering of its kind for these Gold Star families and was put on by the National Guard and Active Duty Survivor Outreach Services. The National Guard says the riverboat ride is the second largest such event in the country.
