American teenager beaten in clash between Israelis and Palestinians

JERUSALEM (CBS) -- A trip to visit family in Jerusalem turned into a nightmare for a Florida teenager who found himself beaten and in the middle of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians.

A video from the incident shows men wearing Israeli security force uniforms holding down and pummeling a teenager. You can see the men beating him, then carrying his limp body away.

15-year-old Tariq Khdeir was visiting his Palestinian relatives in Jerusalem when Friday's attack happened. Relatives say he was attending a demonstration after the death of his cousin, Mohammed Abu Khdeir.

The death sparked a backlash including clashes with police at his funeral Friday. Authorirties are investigating whether or not it was in retaliation for the murder of three Jewish teenagers.

Tariq's mother says she couldn't watch the video of her son's beating.

"I don't want to see the video, I don't want to hear the video.  I don't want to hear it. I don't know what I am going to hear. Am I going to hear him screaming? Am I going to hear him calling for help?" she says.

She says she saw her son in the hospital, but he remains in police custody.

Now a U.S. organization is trying to make sure Tariq is getting the help he needs. A spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister says the incident should be investigated.

The U.S. State Department says it condemn the beating and an official from the U.S. consulate has visited Tariq in the hospital.

The Israeli Defense Forces issued a statement Saturday, hoping to distance themselves from the beating: "It seems that the Israeli police forces were involved in the incident and not the IDF forces."
