Double murder and attempted suicide in Grant County
DRY RIDGE, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- A woman and a man were shot to death Monday night in Dry Ridge and sheriff's investigators said the woman's husband pulled the trigger before trying to kill himself.
Deputies said Shaun Hiles, in his SUV, chased his wife Nicole and Larry Whiteker down Mulligan Road as they drove Larry's pickup truck. Shaun bumped the truck and caused it to spin. Nicole was the passenger.
From inside the SUV, Shaun allegedly fired at the passenger window and killed Nicole. He then grabbed a rifle and deputies say he shot Larry several times. Then, Shaun used the rifle on himself, shooting himself in the chest and stomach.
He was airlifted to U.C. Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition after surgery.
Grant County Sheriff Chuck Dills said, "As the deputies approached the vehicles they found Shaun Hiles lying beside his vehicle with two gun wounds to his chest and stomach area. Do a quick brief interview with him and they discovered that he had shot both individuals that he was chasing after them due to the fact that his wife was with someone else."
Monday afternoon Nicole had talked to Sheriff Dills about being harassed on social media and being stalked by Shaun. She also told them he had damaged her car. Dills advised her to get a protection order. She was in the process of trying to get a protection order signed by a judge.
The Hiles were reportedly separated and Nicole had moved out about a week ago. She had asked for a law enforcement escort to get more clothes and items out of their home.
Deputies said Shaun Hiles has confessed. They are seeking arrest warrants for him and said he'll face two counts of murder when he's released from the hospital.
