Colerain rec center fights to stay open

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- It's a place where young kids and teens get away from the dangers on the street, but after 30 years a recreation center may have to close its doors.

Skyline Rec Center needs about $100,000 to stay open through the winter.

The rec center is so close to other places like Springfield Township, Mt. Healthy and other places. Kids come from all over to have a safe place to spend their days, but money problems may force the center to close.

The double dutch team at Skyline is skilled, winning trophies and traveling all over the country for competitions.

Elaysha Wright is one of the best on the team. She's been coming to the center for years.

"This community center has been a big part of my life since I was in elementary [school]," she says.

There's more than just athletics and summer camps at the center. They have different outreach programs working with churches and local community leaders.

Skyline is on Pippin Road, but services a thousand families from several different communities.

Recently the center, which has a number of inexpensive programs for kids has had some financial problems. It lost its affiliation with the YMCA and is now run by an organization called Kicks for Kids, but still needs about $100,000 to stay open through the winter.

Director Gregory Moore says there are too many people who rely on the center for it to close. And for young people who have grown up here and now mentor others, Skyline needs to remain a safe haven for youth.

The center is looking for sponsors to help out. Organizers are also putting together some summer fundraisers. Both fundraisers are at the center in the last two weeks of August.

Aug. 20 there will be a benefit concert with Vince and the Fellas, and Aug. 23 there will be a flea market with vendors and a fish fry.

The Skyline Recreation Center is at 8500 Pippin Road in Colerain.
