Judge orders Pendleton charter school reopening

PENDLETON, Ohio (WKRC) -- A Hamilton County judge orders a Pendleton charter school to remain open for the next school year.
Judge Nadine Allen said the VLT Academy must enter into a sponsorship contract with the Ohio Department of Education.

The ruling comes two months after the Department of Education said it would not renew the school's sponsorship because of poor academic performance and inappropriate use of state money. "There are issues that we're dealing with from a legal point of view as to whether or not VLT is allocating the funds in an equitable way," says VLT Academy attorney Carl Lewis. "But there's never ever, even in the court's findings, been a finding of misappropriation."
The school once had more than eight hundred students enrolled. That fell to about six hundred last year. Administrators claim the elimination of low-income housing in Over-the-Rhine curbed enrollment.
