Dog and cat shot, others disappear

RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. (Larry Davis) -- There was fear in a local community about the safety of pets after a dog and cat vanished and were later found shot dead.
Other animals have disappeared as well.  Laci Holt said her dog, Montana, and her cat, Sadie, got along.  Several weeks ago Montana disappeared.  Two days later, Sadie went missing.

The remains of the dog and cat were found on top of a garbage bag not far from where they lived.  There was evidence the dog was shot with a shotgun.  Since then, two more dogs have vanished from their homes on County Road 750 East, the same road where Montana and Sadie lived.

Irish Stockard, with the Ripley County Humane Society, feared a possible connection.

"It sounds like a pattern.  We're not at that point yet, we want to know.  But one thing we know for sure, Laci's dog and cat were killed and someone did this to them," said Stockard.

Stockard said she has no idea why anyone would do this to someone's pets.  Meanwhile, a young family has only memories of the dog and cat who were best buddies.

A new law went into effect in July that means tougher punishment for anyone convicted of animal cruelty in Indiana.  It now carries a sentence of up to 2.5 years.
