Investigators: Man used information from dead children for fake tax returns

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A local man was charged with filing fake income tax returns using the identities of dead children.

The indictment said 28-year-old Christopher Smith used the names and Social Security numbers of mostly deceased children, to file the false tax returns between February and June of 2012. Investigators said he was able to get more than $16,000 in tax refunds. They have not said how they believe Smith accessed the children's information.

Smith faces four counts of wire fraud and five counts of aggravated identity theft. If convicted of all charges, Smith could be sentenced to up to 90 years in prison.

Smith is currently serving jail time in the Butler County jail for OVI. After he completes his sentence, he'll be brought to federal court house to face the current charges.
