Health Alert: Whooping cough vaccine for old and young

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A new report said it was not just kids that need to get certain vaccines in the fall around the start of school, but adults may need one too.

At back to school time most students must get the whooping cough vaccine vaccine prior to starting grade school and high school.  But a new report said parents and grandparents should get the whooping cough vaccine also.

It came from the Centers for Disease Control, they have seen about a 40 percent increase in cases.  It seemed mainly because parents don't always get kids vaccinated against whooping cough or get boosters.

If a parent or grandparent hasn't been vaccinated or had a booster it might be a good idea to get one.  It would be an especially good idea if the person will be around little babies who were not old enough to get the vaccine at six months old.

People can get the vaccine at some baby birthing units or just ask the family doctor.  Adults may be able to fight off complications of whooping cough but it could be dangerous to those very young.
