Ice bucket challenge takes over social media

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- People on Facebook have likely seen the videos of people taking on the "ice bucket challenge."

In the name of raising awareness about Lou Gehrig's Disease, people pour buckets of ice water over their heads.  They then challenge others to do the same on social media.

But is this trend actually helping?

The answer is a resounding yes.  The campaign kicked off July 29.  Since then, the ALS Association said it received more than $1.3 million in donations.  The organization collected $22,000 in the same period last year.

A spokesperson expressed awe at the quick rate at which the campaign grew and said it was difficult to anticipate how much it might ultimately raise.  More than a million dollars came in over the weekend alone.
