Newport homicide victim identified, 17-year-old charged
NEWPORT, Ky (WKRC) -- Police identified the victim of a fatal shooting in Newport as 18-year-old D'Angelo Wilson.
Wilson was shot in the head just after 8p.m. Wednesday night. Wilson was a recent graduate of Newport High School and held down two fast food jobs to save money for college.
Police said someone he knew shot and killed him Wednesday night, August 6. Wilson was shot in the back of the head. Officers found him in an apartment on Bluegrass Avenue near Kentucky Drive. Wilson later died at the hospital.
Wilson was a good student and was headed to Morehead State late August. He did not live at Barkley Ridge Apartments where he was found but some friends of his did as well as family.
Samantha Slusher, who grew up with Wilson and graduated with him in June, said, "It's just so sad to see a straight A student and somebody like him get killed. It's just so sad."
Wilson didn't make straight A's but he was a very good student. He had a 3.0 GPA and teachers liked him. Jenna Koroly taught him English for two years.
"D'Angelo was a really sweet kid. He was always concerned about the other kids. He had a smile every time you saw him," Koroly said.
His attitude, work ethic and number of friends made D'Angelo Wilson's violent death a mystery to his school community. Neighbors said he often hung out with people who lived in the apartment where he was shot.
Police have a 17-year-old boy in custody, charged with murder. They have not released the name of the suspect because he is under 18.
