Two lost men rescued near Great Miami River

WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) -- Two men had to be rescued after they left their fishing boat and walked around for hours in Whitewater Township overnight of August 25th, 2014.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said 58-year-old Barry Werning, of Green Township, and 56-year-old Dan Adams, of Cleves, were fishing on the Great Miami River in a four-person rubber raft Sunday evening.

At 9 p.m., both men decided to get out and walk through the woods. They got lost and walked for six and a half hours, before they became exhausted and dehydrated. They collapsed at about 3 a.m. in the woods.

Early Monday morning, the Hamilton County Parks rangers, the sheriff's aviation unit, search and rescue firefighters from Whitewater and Miami Townships began searching for the men by air, ground and water.

At about 9 a.m., the men were spotted by air about 100 yards off the river bank. Rescue boats couldn't get to the men.  A sheriff's helicopter was able to land and flew each man to awaiting paramedics. They were taken to Mercy West Hospital, where they were listed in fair condition.
