Hearse overturns in funeral procession
CINCINNATI (Sydney Benter) -- The hearse in a funeral procession was making its way to a cemetery when it overturned in a crash.
It happened about 1p.m. Wednesday, August 20th, 2014, at Colerain Avenue and Banning Road. The hearse was leading a procession from a funeral home on Cheviot and was hit as it entered the intersection. The crash flipped the hearse which was carrying a body to Arlington Cemetery in Mt Healthy.
The priest and funeral home director inside the hearse along with the driver who hit them were expected to be fine. There was a police escort, so officials weren't sure why the car went into the intersection and hit the hearse.
James Love, Colerain Police Chaplain, said, "It's not every day that hearses get hit. And on top of getting it, get hit in such a way they flip over. They're thinking that by the angle of the hearse that is why the hearse flipped all the way over which seems to be a little bit surreal."
Local 12 was told the burial did go on after the crash. Crews were able to get the casket out of the hearse and another funeral home gathered the procession and went on to the cemetery.
