Shared Harvest seeks donations for children
FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Perry Schaible) -- Students at school get fed every day, but sometimes on the weekend they go hungry.
The shared Harvest Food Bank wants to prevent that from happening.
In 2013 nearly 380,000 pounds of food went out through their backpack program. 83,000 food bags went out to kids.
Kids of need are identified through the schools. Once they are, they're given a bag of food items every Friday for the weekend.
Ben Powers of the Shared Harvest Food Bank said, "There's a social aspect to it. If you're going to school and you're hungry, you can't concentrate. You've been in a meeting where you're hungry and you are like come on, I need to get some dinner or get some lunch. That's how a kid is while at school."
Each of the bags that go home with the kids over the weekend cost about $3.60. Shared Harvest gets a discount when they buy it in bulk, so they're asking for cash donations.
