Police identify Fairfield toddler who drowned in a pond

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Sydney Benter) -- Fairfield Police identify the child who drowned in a backyard pond Sunday, August 24th, 2014, as An Luong.

Police responded to the 6200 block of Casey Court after there were reports of a small child falling into a water decoration.  The 18-month boy was pulled from the pond Sunday night, August 24.  Family members started CPR but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The accident shook up neighbors. One mom Local 12 talked to has a child the very same age

Neighbor Michelle Capal said, "And so that makes me sad.  My heart just really goes out to the family.  I mean, I can't even imagine because you can't, I don't know."

Emergency responders were also reeling from the accident.  The Fairfield fire chief said he was going to recommend post-traumatic counseling for a couple of the medics who responded to the scene.  He had a recommendation for everyone else, too.

Chief Don Bennett said, "Often times we relate the depth of the water to the potential for drowning, and that's not the case in any situation and this tragedy brings that to the forefront."

Emergency responders have a close tie to the family who just lost their youngest son.  The family owns an alterations business and is responsible for keeping the department's uniforms looking their best.

"The majority of our people on the fire department know members of the family and our hearts and souls reach out to them and certainly will keep them in our prayers," Chief Bennett said.

Chief Bennett told Local 12 neighbors got together in a cul-de-sac at the end of the street Sunday night and had a prayer circle for the little boy.  Local 12 visited the strip mall where the family's alteration business is and everyone who works nearby had nothing but kind things to say about the family.  Local 12 was told they're wonderful parents.

Police said the incident was under investigation. An autopsy was performed Monday.
