Grassroots effort in New Richmond helps fight heroin epidemic

NEW RICHMOND, Ky. (WKRC) -- Ohio has a new team in place to help fight the heroin epidemic.

Attorney General Mike DeWine created a special unit in his office to help communities go after dealers.  A New Richmond grassroots group called the River Rats on Attack met with the three members of the unit,  Two of the members have lost children to the heroin epidemic.
The goal of the unit is to help local communities develop their own prevention and education plans.

"Churches cannot be neglected, they have to be a part of it.  Businesses have to be a part of it, the schools have to be a part of it.  Victims who are recovering addicts need to be a part of that as well.  If you put all those things together, good things are going to happen," said DeWine.

DeWine said every community should do what New Richmond did and create their own grassroots effort.
