Ky auditor calls for changes to CVG airport board

FLORENCE, Ky. (Jeff Hirsh) -- Decades of waste and abuse, those words from the Kentucky Auditor regarding the Board of the Cincinnati - Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Kentucky auditor Adam Edelen announced the findings of his audit at the Gateway Community and Technical College in Florence Tuesday, August 19th, 2014. The Kenton County Airport Board runs the airport, even though it is in Boone County. Edelen called the board dysfunctional and financially screwed up. He says this has led to a culture of excess.

Despite public and media scrutiny, reports of expensive travel, food and drinks have persisted for more than 15 years. Edelen says the only way to change this is to change how the board is chosen.

Right now the Kenton County Judge Executive appoints all seven members of the board. Edelen presented his plan for change. His plans call for three members to be appointed by Kenton County, two by Boone County and one by Campbell County. Kentucky's governor would choose two more. And three would be appointed on the Ohio side; one by Ohio's governor, one by Hamilton County and one by the city of Cincinnati. That would add members to the board for a total of eleven.

Kenton County Judge Executive-Elect, Kris Knochelmann is also pushing for the changes, even though he would lose the power of appointing all the members. Knochelmann campaigned on making those changes. Even so, the Kentucky legislature has the final say.
