7-year-old shot by brother, kids say gun was found behind home
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Jeff Hirsh) -- Police are trying to figure out how a 10-year-old got his hands on a gun and shot his 7-year old brother in the back.
The boys said they found the gun behind their home in Colerain Township Sunday afternoon, August 10. According to a township spokesperson, the boy was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries Monday. But while the injuries were not life threatening, the situation certainly could have been.
The 911 call came from a house on Impala Drive in Colerain. A 7-year-old was shot in the back. Police concluded his 10-year-old brother pulled the trigger. The situation was being treated as an accident and police were trying to figure out who owned the gun and how it ended up in the hands of a 10-year-old.
According to the township public information officer, both of the children said the gun was found near the home, behind the home. It was the house on the other side of the fence from there the boy was shot but he specifics are still unclear. One this seemed very clear, a child shooting was very unsettling to the neighborhood.
Neighbor James Decker said, "Yeah that's a little scary. I don't know where they got a hold of a gun. I don't know where it came from. I hear on the news, I don't think they knew either. They're trying to figure it out."
The police spokesperson said charges were not likely. The case will be turned over to children's services. A representative for that agency told Local 12 News the boys lived with their grandparents who obtained legal custody in 2012. Children's services has had no contact with the grandparents and the children since then.
Police are not releasing the boys' names.
