Community hosts "Know your Neighbor Day"

AVONDALE, Ohio (Angela Ingram) -- It's called know your neighbor day and it went on in Avondale Saturday, August 23, 2014.

Avondale was a place in which there had been a recent spike in gun violence.  It was seen as a chance for people to come out of their homes and have a peaceful time together.  People who live in the area said the event was exactly what the neighborhood needed.

Families enjoyed a day out with their children as part of "Know Your Neighbor Day."  It was put together by community activists and happened on Ridgeway, just off Reading Road.  In addition to food and fun for families the event was a chance to connect people with resources for jobs.

Neighbors said part of the key to ending the violence would be connecting people to the resources they need for jobs in the community.  Local 12 spoke with the Captain for the district and she said there have been a number of changes made in the area to deal with the violence.  There have been patrols every hour through the area and officers on foot talking to the people who live there in an attempt to keep the area calm.

Community activists continue working with police to plan other events similar to this one to help keep away violence.
