Building collapse in the West End

WEST END, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- Cincinnati fire crews and police were on the scene of a partial building collapse in the West End Monday, August 25th, 2014.

Two workers barely escaped.  One side of the building that used to house the Liberty Lounge collapsed Monday morning at about 10 a.m. It was at Liberty and John.

The workers were inside trying to shore up the wall. They heard the building start to give way and ran outside. They were not hurt. People in an adjoining building had to be evacuated.

The building shared a basement with another building, where the owner lived. That could cause some issues with demolition. The building inspector came out to determine what was next. Duke Energy has cut power to the building.

West Liberty is closed between John Street and Central Avenue. There was some hope that one lane will reopen by the end of the day, but for now, it's closed in both directions.

The Liberty Lounge was closed two years ago after police served search warrants. There were complaints at that time that the building was crumbling in parts and was a health hazard for customers.
