Howard Ain, Troubleshooter: Door To Door Kirby Vacuum Sales

CINCINNATI (Howard Ain) -- When you sign a contract with a door-to-door salesman you have three days to change your mind and cancel the deal.

But a local woman complains when her mother cancelled such a contract, she had a hard time trying to make the cancellation stick.    

Renee Gruseck of Price Hill says a door-to-door salesman sold her mother a new vacuum cleaner.

Problem is, Gruseck says, she doesn't need a new vacuum cleaner.

"I came in took a look at the sweeper, took a look at the contract, got the phone number and the name of the facility."

A company sold Gruseck's mother a Kirby Sweeper, complete with lots of attachments.

Gruseck had her mother sign to cancel then called the company to explain about her mother's mild cognitive impairment.

"I explained to them that there was an impairment and that they'd be best served discussing it with me because my concern was if she cancels it they would try to resell the sweeper to her."

Nevertheless, when they came to pick up the Kirby Vacuum and return her mother's sweeper her mother signed a new contract to buy the Kirby again.

At this point, Gruseck says all she wants to do is return this entire unit and get her mother's sweeper back. but she's having a hard time with the company.

"I had an appointment scheduled with one of their employees a week ago Wednesday at 8:30 in the evening and they didn't show up. There are other methods of sweeping and cleaning your floor that doesn't require a $1500 sweeper."

Actually, when you include the 25 percent interest rate over three years-- the total cost is more than $2100.

"She could afford the sweeper, but it was a matter that she didn't need the sweeper. She had a sweeper. She has her carpets professionally cleaned, there's no need for her to have that sweeper."

The company scheduled another pickup time, Gruseck took off work to be there and got back her mother's vacuum as well as money that had been paid.

Bottom line, remember you have three days to cancel a door-to-door sale.

And keep an eye on older relatives who may not fully  realize what they're getting themselves into with some of these contracts.
