RedHawks Tabbed Fifth in MAC Preseason Football Poll

DETROIT - In a poll of the Mid-American Conference media, the Miami University RedHawks were predicted to finish fifth in the MAC East Division, the conference announced Tuesday (July 23) at its annual Football Media Day at Ford Field in Detroit.

Coach Don Treadwell's RedHawks return 47 letterwinners, including 15 starters, from a season ago. Among those returners is two-time first-team All-MAC defensive back Dayonne Nunley, who is on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list for the second straight season.

The Red & White secured 78 points in the East Division voting. Ohio was tabbed to win the MAC East Division, capturing 164 points and 15 first-place votes. Bowling Green was predicted to finish second and notched eight first-place votes, while defending MAC East Division Champion Kent State was forecast to finish third and earned one first-place vote. Buffalo finished fourth in the preseason poll and also received one first-place vote. Akron and Massachusetts rounded out the East Division preseason poll in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Northern Illinois was predicted to win the West Division, garnering 16 first-place votes, and also received 14 votesmore than the other schools combinedto win the 2013 MAC Marathon Championship. Toledo was forecast to finish second in the West Division and received five-first-place votes. Ball State was tabbed third and notched three first-place votes, while Central Michigan was predicted to finish fourth, earning one first place vote. Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan rounded out the West Division preseason poll in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

The 2013 season kicks off on Thursday, August 29 with four non-conference games. The 2013 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game will be played at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday, December 6 at 8 p.m.

Miami opens its season at Marshall on Saturday, Aug. 31 and hosts Cincinnati in the RedHawks home opener on Saturday, Sept. 21. Two weekends later, the RedHawks open MAC play when Miami hosts Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 5.
