Sean Kilpatrick Talks About Making World University Games Team

University of Cincinnati senior guard Sean Kilpatrick will continue to train with the USA Basketball World University Games Team in Colorado Springs, Colo. until the squad departs for Kazan, Russia on July 1.

The basketball competition at the World University Games runs July 7-16.

Kilpatrick spoke with for a brief question and answer session on Saturday evening.

What was your reaction when you were named to the team?
We were watching film and I noticed there were fewer players in the room. When that was over Coach (Bob McKillop of Davidson College) said this was the team. I was so happy. Im ready to get the show on the road.

How do you feel you performed during the tryout portion of training camp?
My performance was great. I was able to show a lot of energy and good defense. I drove to the lane and dished to teammates and made shots as well. I was trying to make the most of it.

These coaches are outstanding. Its easy to play for them because they have such a great understanding of the game. Im blessed to be here.

Have you ever been to Russia?
Ive never been out of the country except when our UC team went to Canada (September 2010). Im looking forward to it.

What are your plans between now and when the team departs for Russia?
From now until then its all about continuing to form a tight bond and relationship with my teammates since were going to be together for the next month. We pretty much know each other on the court but its just as important now to get to know everyone off the court too. We all know the importance of having a tight bond. Everyone has a one track mind right now and thats to win the gold and come back home.

What do you think you bring to the team and why do you think they selected you to the team?
I think I bring toughness. I can score the ball with my shot or I can slash to the rim. I bring a lot of energy too.  You have a lot of great players and great scorers on this team that put up 30 points anytime. Im just focusing on my role and thats to bring toughness and energy. If everyone just focuses on their roles, I dont think we can be beat. How do to react to knowing you join Erick Hicks, Kenyon Martin and Pete Mickeal as UC players to play in the World University Games?
Wow, thats such a shock hearing you say that. I just got chills. Ive been talking a lot with Eric Hicks on how I can get to the point where I make the team. Hes helped me a lot. Coach (Mick Cronin) has talked to me a lot during this process too, telling me to focus on the little things that will help me make the team. Its a great honor.
